Understanding Stock Quotes
How to read Stock Index Tables
Stock Quotes
Understanding
stock quotes
and stock index tables - they may look confusing
but
they are really quite easy to understand once you know what
information they contain and what to look for.
Each one will contain certain basic
information and others will be slightly more detailed depending on the
source and the target reader.
Basic information contained in a
stock quote and stock index tables
Stocks
name or ticker
The ticker is the code by which that
stock is identified
eg Dow
Jones Industrial Average ticker is DJIA
Price
The prices quoted usually refer to the
mid price between the bid/ask
Offer
(Ask) / Bid
Offer (Ask) is the price you have to
pay to buy
Bid is the price you can sell your
stock for
Note - the difference between
the two is called the spread
the spread is the market makers profit
Change
This is the change in price from the
previous close
High
/ Low / Close
The Close is the stocks closing price
(mid) that day
high / low refers to the (mid) price
extremes that it traded at that day
high / low may also be shown for the
Week, Month or Year (52wk)
More information for understanding
stock
quotes and stock
index tables
Volume
(vol)
The amount of that stocks shares that
were traded on the day
Dividend
(div)
The level of dividends paid to
shareholders
Yield
(yld)
Rate of return for your investment from
dividend payments
A $20 stock with a yld of 5% would pay
you $1 in dividends
Price/Earnings
Ratio (P/E)
The stocks price divided by its
earnings for the year
Market
Capitalization (Market Cap)
The total value of all the companys
shares issued.
Traders tip:
a common mistake people make is to think that a stock trading at $5
must be a better buy than one trading at $20 because it is cheaper. In
actual fact this has no relevance as to whether that stock is a good
buy or not.
eg. The $5 may have 10m shares issued
meaning it has a market cap of $50m where the $20 stock may only have
2m shares issued giving it a market cap of $40m
Again, this in itself has no real relevance in stock picking.
